For the Canon Powershot SD1400is, is a Class 6 SDHC card necessary?
I'm caught up between a class 4 and class 6 card. I'll either be getting an 8GB or a 16GB, although I'm leaning toward the 8GB. I will be purchasing this camera in a few days and I plan on shooting HD video frequently. I hear that a class 4 card is the bare minimum for this. Any owners of this camera have any thoughts?
HD video is my concern.
For HD video (as well as optimum camera performance and fast file transferal) a Class 6 card is the better option. Canon's newest cameras feature their latest Digic IV processor, so they really do take advantage of fast cards. I highly recommend Sandisk's Class 6 Extreme III, which is faster than many other Class 6 cards.
Speed classes only specify a card's minimum write speed, not their maximum, which means not all cards of the same class are the same speed. Some are a lot slower than others in the same class. And, Sandisk's Ultra II (Class 4) is faster than a number of other brands of Class 6 card. So, when buying a card you need to choose carefully. As a Class 4 card, the Ultra II is very fast...but, I'd recommend the Extreme III (especially for recording HD video) because it's faster.
p.s. make sure you format your brand new card before you use it the very first time (the User Guide tells you this)...and after you transfer ALL files to your computer. Formatting deletes all files in one go and keeps the card in good order and helps prevent card errors.
