When buying an upper end slr digital camera is it better to put more into the camera body or lens?
Simple question, complex answer. How upper end is the body? And what lenses (if any) do you have now? (If you have great glass now, the choice is easy).
When you buy a dslr, I think you are buying more into the line up of lenses than you are into the body. A great digital body five years ago is fairly marginal right now. A great lens five years ago is still a great lens.
That is not to say that lenses have not improved (more features, VR or IS, and faster autofucus technology) but rather the pace is much slower. But not every brand has an equal line up. Take a constant aperature 70-200 lens. The Nikon is stunning in all ways -- good build, quality, solid in the hand, great bokeh, stunning photos, VR, and fast at f 2.8. It is also very expensive, large and heavy. Canon has a similar lens at a similar price. I think the Nikon is a much better lens.
OTOH, Canon has a little brother -- smaller, lighter and slower (70-200 f4). And priced almost $1,000 less than the big brother. You can't really add a 1.7x tele on it, it might be too slow for indoor work without a flash and it has no VR. But it is still a pretty nice lens. And $1k would allow you to buy a really nice Gitzo tripod, kirk or RRS mouting plates and a ball head (kirk, RRS or Arca Swiss)with enough left over for a camera bag.
Is that a better choice? That depends (it was not for me) BUT it is a choice the Canon line up offers and not the Nikon.
The previous poster was correct about the 50mm f 1.8 -- a great value at around $100. I think my 70-200 f2.8 vr yields better pictures and is certainly more versatile. But then it cost at least 16 times what the 50mm does (and probably weighs 20x as much to boot!)
So, what to do? It depends. I'll make some assumptions to illustrate. Lets say you buy the Nikon D70 with the kit lens (a decent lens, and a great deal when bought as the kit). This gets you out taking pictures today with a decent camera body. You will learn what lenses you most want and can make smarter purchases. You will end up with less overlap in your lineup.
If you buy a Nikon D2X and want to start taking pictures of high school football games, you might be disappointed if you skimp on the lenses. The D2x is reputed to be a great body but unforgiving in that it shows the limitations of the lens. Great lens can produce stunning results while average/poor lens will often have "issues." ANyway, a cheap lens will not have the reach or speed for the HS football.
A final thing to consider is price points and your budget. If you have one chunk of cash and it needs to last for some time, I might go with a lower cost body and spend on other items. If I had the cash now for the great body but knew I would have cash later for lenses, I might buy the great body. In the end, if you are serious, you will almost certainly have more invested in lenses and other items than in the bodies.
What other items? Well, pro quality lenses are pricey. A Tokina 12-24 is less than $500; the Nikon is almost $1k. The 17-55 f2.8 is also over $1k. As is the 200 macro. As is the 85mm f1.4. As is...
Still there are some great values and some pretty reasonable compromise. Look at the reviews and forums on http://www.dpreview.com/ Also remember that you will probably be looking at a tripod at some point http://www.bythom.com/support.htm , filters, a bag, etc.
In short, I would not buy a D2X if it meant I had average lens, few storage cards and a rickety tripod for an extended period. I'd rather have the D200 (especially when the banding issue goes away) or the D70 and the other items.
