when will canon release a newer 18-55mm EF-S lense?
I really dislike the current one and was wondering if anyone has any predictions as to when the new one could be released

Canon has already produced three versions of the EF-S 18-55mm lens...with each one being slightly improved over the previous one. The latest version with IS is the best yet and has had some positive reviews. However...
It's a kit lens...it's designed as a starter lens.
It's cheap, has plastic construction, plastic lens mount and no USM. It costs around US$170.
You want better? You'll have to buy a better lens.
In the same focal range, I recommend the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. It's a better lens and costs around US$1000.
Also have a look at the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. It costs around US$350-400.
A must have lens is the EF 50mm f/1.8 II. It's a prime lens (fixed focal length). It has a cheap plastic build, but produces sharper image quality than your kit lens. It allows you to shoot handheld in low light, no flash (something your kit lens just can't do).
It costs only around US$100.
Or you can buy the better, 50mm f/1.4 USM version for around US$350.
Do you notice the apertures of all the above lenses I have mentioned? f/2.8 or faster. The best the kit lens can do is f/3.5 at it's widest and f/5.6 at 55mm.
So, when looking for a lens...try to get the fastest you can afford.
