Help selecting a new lens for my Canon 40D.?
I'm looking to purchase a new lens for my Canon 40D. I currently have the Canon 50mm f1.4 that pretty much stays on the camera, but I sometimes run into situations where I need a wider focal length to capture everyday images in dim/low light situations w/o using a flash. I think I have gotten it narrowed down to 2 different lens and wanted some input and reviews about them before I purchase. Which would be a better 'all around' lens but also allow me to use as a portrait lens as well? Any help, advise or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Here are the two:

fhotoace is correct that the 17 will give you a wider angle of view, but I believe the 24-70 to be a superior lens in terms of build and image quality. On the other hand, there is no IS in the 24-70 which can be a lifesaver in certain situations.
But if your main focus is portraits, I can't imagine IS being a must have feature.
I was also looking at these two lenses a about 2 years ago and I went with the 24-70 and have never regretted it.
